Sigh. That's what gets me down about this game -- the button sequences (too much button mashing!) and the endless "getting killed with no way to defend yourself" sequences.
I've never been a fan of "survival" or "survival horror" games. Getting set upon by wolves, or being used for target practice by Russians, isn't fun.
Does this game get easier eventually?
I think it gets easier, as you understand the mechanics. Once you get the gun, it gets easier, I'd say. As you upgrade your gun, it gets easier. But to do that, you have to do a lot. You could always visit campfires, and some campfires let you go back to previous campfires. So you can go back to easier spots (or to collect things, you might have missed, or could not access because you didn't have the right weapon for it).
As for button mashing, I wouldn't say there's button mashing at all, really in this game.
Usually when a wolf grabs you (or a person grabs you), it's two buttons (to symbolize back and forth, that it would be if it were on a controller, like "A", "Z" rinse repeat - then, it usually goes into a slow motion to press the "action" button which might be "F", for example). So yes, tap "A, Z" fast (or whatever it is on a keyboard), and then be ready to press the button it shows (in slow motion no less, so it's easy) to hit the "action" button to break the hold. The rest is, aim and fire (or take cover, aim and fire).
I wasn't ever a fan of Tomb Raider (back in the Playstation days), but like everyone else back then, got it. Sucked at it.
I'd heard so much good stuff about this game, I picked it up on sale. Yes, took some getting used to (and dying a lot sometimes), but I eventually got the hang of it.
And managed to get through it - and the story, to me, is incredible. They do a great job with the cast of characters in the game (the people from your ship and the villain in the game) and the story behind the island was fantastic. So it made it worth it, to me, to endure the stupid wolves, and the stupid guy by the bridge (he will be the one to grab you when you think it's safe).
If you get stuck somewhere, and if you ever find out where the frick Gog Galaxy stores the game locally for you, I am more than happy to catch up to where you are on my PC, save just past it, and get that to you.
Also if this isn't for you, I take no offense if you're like, "Yeah, I tried" (which you did) "and it's not for me."
