........ aaaaaand now I'm a prisoner of some Russian dudes who tied my hands, stole my bow, and are looking to kill me. No fair. :( I tried sneaking around then, but there are way too many of them, and I get killed again and again and again, with no way to defend myself.

What am I supposed to do? Spoilers welcome. :)
OK - doing this one from memory.

When you first get untied... stay behind the wall. One of the guys will make his way down - wait for him to pass.

Then run to the next wall (stay on the right side of it, not on the road). Make your way up.

Go to the left, and there's a shed you can hide in.

You WILL get caught here, but when you do, there will be a button sequence to do to get out of it.

And it's here, you will, if memory serves, get your first gun.

Sigh. That's what gets me down about this game -- the button sequences (too much button mashing!) and the endless "getting killed with no way to defend yourself" sequences.

I've never been a fan of "survival" or "survival horror" games. Getting set upon by wolves, or being used for target practice by Russians, isn't fun. :(

Does this game get easier eventually?

I think it gets easier, as you understand the mechanics. Once you get the gun, it gets easier, I'd say. As you upgrade your gun, it gets easier. But to do that, you have to do a lot. You could always visit campfires, and some campfires let you go back to previous campfires. So you can go back to easier spots (or to collect things, you might have missed, or could not access because you didn't have the right weapon for it).

As for button mashing, I wouldn't say there's button mashing at all, really in this game.

Usually when a wolf grabs you (or a person grabs you), it's two buttons (to symbolize back and forth, that it would be if it were on a controller, like "A", "Z" rinse repeat - then, it usually goes into a slow motion to press the "action" button which might be "F", for example). So yes, tap "A, Z" fast (or whatever it is on a keyboard), and then be ready to press the button it shows (in slow motion no less, so it's easy) to hit the "action" button to break the hold. The rest is, aim and fire (or take cover, aim and fire).

I wasn't ever a fan of Tomb Raider (back in the Playstation days), but like everyone else back then, got it. Sucked at it.

I'd heard so much good stuff about this game, I picked it up on sale. Yes, took some getting used to (and dying a lot sometimes), but I eventually got the hang of it.

And managed to get through it - and the story, to me, is incredible. They do a great job with the cast of characters in the game (the people from your ship and the villain in the game) and the story behind the island was fantastic. So it made it worth it, to me, to endure the stupid wolves, and the stupid guy by the bridge (he will be the one to grab you when you think it's safe).

If you get stuck somewhere, and if you ever find out where the frick Gog Galaxy stores the game locally for you, I am more than happy to catch up to where you are on my PC, save just past it, and get that to you.

Also if this isn't for you, I take no offense if you're like, "Yeah, I tried" (which you did) "and it's not for me."

Well, yeah, I tried. I'm still trying. I got as far as this:

So, I got as far as that, and even managed to knock the pistol out of his hands, but somehow, it always comes back to shoot me. :(

But on the other hand, I found where the GOG Galaxy stores the game locally for me. :) (Too bad I can't attach it here).

Would you be able to get past this Russian guy for me, please?

Here ye go.

To explain a little... she struggles with that guy over the gun. Ends up shooting him through the eye in the struggle. Grabs the gun and her bow. She moves ahead, gets ambushed, fights them off - escapes a burning building. Makes her way around. She hears Ross (one of the guys on the boat with her) on the walkie talkie who says he sees smoke and that she explains its her. She then finds a campfire.

here you go.

Oh, my...! I just tried this savegame, and at first, all of them said they were saved on 00/00/0000 (i.e. the 0th day of the 0th month in the year 0000). Obviously, that didn't make much sense.

But I pushed past that, and found that one of the saved games is 22% complete ... and the other is 72% complete? What's going on? I'm confused. :)

Also, in one of the saved games, I briefly saw someone parachuting and Lara said "The pilot. I have to get to him." So, I swung on something like a trapeze, crashed through some barrels ... and then the house collapsed off the cliff, with me in it. *shrug*

I found a new way to die. ;) Or, in the happy words of the D&D Barbarian Glutnik, who sprang a fire trap, but was tough enough to survive it: "Glutnik find trap!" :D

HAHAHA! I copied all my saves apparently! One of them - odd, the dates weren't there - should be newer than the others.

So the save1.dat should have a 2/1/2026 date stamp on it.

I see why now - those were my Steam saves vs my GoG saves. I was playing on Steam originally.

I installed the GoG version because I wasn't sure my Steam versions would work with GoG. And so when I went to get it, I grabbed the wrong save folder.

Um ... when I try, google tells me "Access Denied" and I have to request access (from whom, I have no idea). So I requested it. *shrug*

I guess google tightened their security recently? I'm obviously not trying to do something I shouldn't.

No, that was my fault. Forgot to turn on the share permissions.

Should be fixed now.

Ah, thanks! :) I got the files when you shared them by gmail.

I'm moving around and trying, and I got up to the point where you shoot lanterns and set a place on fire (and a little later, when you manage to stealth-kill two bad guys). But I've no idea where to go after that. *shrug* I can see two or three (or even four?) guys with torches in a level above me, but I'm not sure how to get to that level. (There's a wooden wall that leads there, and it sort of looks like a door? But I'm not sure if I can open it, or jump over it, or what). :?

I also tried shooting those guys, just for fun. (Probably shouldn't have done that). But as soon as I do that, they start shouting "There she is!!!" and start shooting fire arrows at me. Then they set the whole place on fire, and Lara gets barbecued. How do these guys see Lara so fast - what, do they have night-vision goggles or something? :P

So, any ideas what I should do?

Based on that description - you do indeed need to make your way upward. There will eventually be a wall with a big hole in it that you can climb out onto the ledge, if it is where I think you are. :)

There are barrels and crates you can hide behind as you make your way up killing them.
