Johnny Castaway - Built for Web - Screen Antics - 1992

This is a proof of concept, it's Johnny Castaway originally released by ScreenAntics (Sierra Online) in 1992 as a screen-saver for Windows 3.1.

This is Johnny Castaway in all its original 16-color glory! Due to Johnny Castaway's dithered artwork technique, it often seems like there are more colors than are actually there. These are all of them!

This application, is a prototyped demo, of Johnny Castaway running as a native WASM/Web app.

It currently has no sound or music. That can be added later! Additionally, it only includes 62 iconic scenes from Johnny Castaway!

Some of the things I shared with them -

The one thing I noticed, some scenes pass way too quickly. Top of my mind, when we see Johnny in the office, typing and he begins to dream. The dream sequence starts and ends within 1 second. But it's pretty nice to just be able to see all the scenes

Thanks! Yes, i noticed that too and have to figure out what’s going there. There’s a handful of sync, timing issues for me to work out. Also adding sounds and including the holiday stuff when running on the right day. I have a list of issues to work through for sure.

The only other thing is each "scene" is an entire shift (to the island being relocated) where as originally it was only the "black out" scenes that would change the island's location and Johnny would move about the island doing a number of those other "scenes" without the island moving.

Would be cool, since you're doing the browser, if there was a way to poke to a specific scene. Like jump to "scene 13" in some way. Or arrow left/right to move the scene to the next/prior.

But amazing job so far! I captured it full screen and am uploading it to my Let's Play Sierra Games channel and linking back down to your site.

Awesome! Thanks for the featuring this work! The arrow keys do work and allow you to sequentially skip scenes. Try it out.

I’m also thinking of ways to improve it such as your suggestion. Or even making it wide screen for modern monitor aspect ratios. There’s definitely room for improvement.

But I also want to ensure the game stays true to the original. Or screensaver I should say.
