What's this? A piece of paper on the Cliffs of Logic?

This one's not as cool because it doesn't actually even say King's Quest on it. But this was my receipt from KQ6.

So I had a discussion with my wife around this.

Games in 1992 were costing 50-57 (or in this case, 62 dollars).

So I did some digging. Looked at something that's spiked in cost since 1992. Gas.
1992 - Jan 1992 - $1.10 - Average for the year - $1.24

So let's just go with the Average of $1.25

So 2020 has just begun. So let's take a step back to 2019.
2019 - Jan 2019 - 3.23 Average - 3.94

This is a difference of $2.69

Today, games (normal, no special package) still average around 50 to 60 dollars. (Gears of War Tactics, for example: https://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/gears- ... aseoptions)

So, on Average - if I am doing my math right, I actually paid about "161 dollars" (Average Dollar worth * cost of KQ6) for King's Quest 6. :D

Looks like you purchased something else unrelated to KQ6 along with the game (which was the $49.99 -- don't think you got KQ6 for $7.95 at that time ;) ).

So, on its own with the 7.75% state sales tax (+$3.87), the total cost of KQ6 was $53.86.

Using a single commodity -- especially a somewhat 'volatile' one like the price of gasoline -- is probably not a good indicator as to inflation. Instead, use the West Egg Inflation Calculator, which is based on the U.S. Consumer Price Index:

https://westegg.com/inflation/

Amt of Money: $53.86
Initial Year: 1992 (year purchased)
Final Year: 2019 (closest year to current)

...which would be $99.39 in 2019 dollars. 8-)

Oh! You're right! I think that's the Hint Book, maybe? Because that was also in my box. I would buy Sierra hint books not because to use them as a hint book - for my first run - but a second run to get full points (see what I missed) and sometimes they had cool tidbits in them. So I bet that's what that is.

And as for gasoline, I did that because I'd use the "average" of how much gas cost in a given year. Thought that would be a fair amount since it'd go up and down - and we'd use an average. I couldn't think of anything else where it'd be easy to google the cost. I hadn't thought of actually looking up an inflation site that would do the magic.

Because the price of gas is so volatile it is not factored into inflation rates.

I don't have any Sierra receipts, but I still have the receipt for F-15 Strike Eagle from MicroProse (which I guess is making a comeback) from Radio Shack. One of the big ones they used that took almost a whole sheet of paper even if all you did was buy some batteries. $34.95 in December 1987. That's still about the price for some new games now.

I also read a while ago an article on console prices. Adjusted for inflation, some of the earlier consoles were starting to approach $1000 adjusting for inflation.

I think I kept a lot of my Sierra receipts because I'd do that thing of "Registering" the game with Sierra (sending in the card that was in the box) - so I'd photocopy back in the day and send that and keep the original in case something came up.
